How do you find out about your mother's past?

I found out about a month or so ago that I was adopted. I have a lot of questions and a lot were answered. What I am wondering is, "How would I be able to find out information about my mother's past if I don't know her maiden name or anything like that?" I just know her married name "Thomson."
