I can't download anything?

Every time I click a download link on the internet the download will never start. I really want to download Steam and Skype but I can't. This happens on Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. I have managed to download a few things off mediafire recently but that is it. I think it might have something to do with my internet connection but I am not sure. Help?
