When i got back from holiday my suitcase had been ripped? thomson said its not down to them? so did gatwick?

when i was collecting my suitcase at the baggage reclaim i finally got it and there was a big rip all across the top, it was 3am and there was no one to talk to so we left the airport. i emailed thomson and they said i should of told someone at the airport and they are not sure if now i am home if i can report it but said i need to contact the airport., so i emailed them and then they said its got nothing to do with them and its all down to thomson?! i have emailed thomson saying i have had rubbish service from their company apart from actually abroad and on the flight. i said i wanted to book a wedding with them but think i wont bother now as my boyfriend proposed on holiday. i am fuming. what do i do? if they do sort it what am i likely to get out of it? i have thrown the suitcase now but i do have photographic evidence with labels of my flight no. and stuff in the photo!!
