How can I restore my files settings?

Well i had a file that was zipped on my laptop and i couldn't re-open it after i used it once so i thought if i opened it using some other program like internet explorer it would work..well now i kind of messed it up so how can i undo changing it and restore it as a zipped file or even access it properly a different way? pleaseee help!!
